There are many reasons that fathers opt to be the stay-at-home parent, and of course no two families (or fathers) are the same. That being said there are several core reasons to become a stay-at-home dad, far and above the fact that you won’t have to put up with your over-demanding boss any more!
One of the main reasons fathers decide to stay at home is because they want to be more involved in their children’s lives. This may be because as a family the decision is made to undertake the home-schooling of the children, or simply because the father would like to take a bigger part in the emotional and mental development of his kids. Getting to spend time with your children when they’re young is one of the easiest and best ways to form a bond that will last a life-time.
Another common reason for making the choice to become a ‘home dad’ is financial. It may be that the wife or partner’s career is higher earning than the father’s, thus it makes sense for the father to be the one to stay at home. Of course some couples make the decision one way or the other even if it does not financially make sense to do so – that is, the father may be earning more but may still decide to stay at home. Obviously it all comes down to personal choice.
Finally, the choice may be made because the father decides he wants a break in his career or a chance to start afresh. Taking time out to be with your family and to reassess is a great way to form strong bonds and to clarify your sense of purpose.
