stay at home fatherHome dads’, ‘homemakers’, ‘Mr Moms’, ‘house husbands’, ‘domesticated men’ - call them what you will – these dedicated individuals choose to stay at home to raise their children and keep their house running efficiently while their partners become the main bread winners. Although they may differ from the traditional paradigm of a ‘house wife’, they are just as capable and just as happy to be the stay-at-home parent in the relationship. In fact, more and more men are realising that it is an option to become a stay-at-home dad, and are electing to be the ‘homemaker’ so that their partners can focus on their careers.

Just like stay-at-home mums, home-dads need support groups and advice to get through the everyday running of their house and family. It is important that men that elect to stay at home are not ostracized or ignored simply because they are different from ‘the norm’, and that they receive as much help and support as mothers do. A number of groups aimed at bringing together ‘home dads’ to discuss parenting and homemaking problems and solutions have sprung up all over the UK to meet demand. There are also a huge number of publications and websites providing advice to dads (and mums) who find themselves in the ‘home dad’ situation. The most important thing to keep in mind – whether you are yourself a male homemaker or you are researching the possibilities of making the switch – is that it is an increasing trend and that the support that is available now is sure to improve in order to keep up with demand.
